Creating Custom OpenAthens Links for Exception Resources

It is recommended to use the "built in" permanent link generator for the following Database/Vendor platforms:

  • EBSCO
  • Gale
  • Kanopy
  • O'Reilly Safari
  • ProQuest, and ProQuest Ebook Central

Each database is set up a bit differently, look for an internal option to link, share, or cite - these functions will generate a link that you can use. The screenshots below are offered as a sample. Note: You cannot copy and paste the URL at the top of your browser from any of these resources, as it is not persistent and will not initiate a UBC login.

EBSCO Example

It is recommended to use the "built in" permanent link generator:

Clinical Key Instructions

In almost all cases, Clinical Key items such as e-books or journal articles will be indexed in Summon. We recommend using a Summon persistent URL (PURL) for Clinical Key items whenever possible, as described here.

For Clinical Key items that are not indexed in Summon, please obtain a "durable URL" from the appropriate list here (durable URLs are available for books, book chapters, journals, clinical overviews, and procedure videos), then Athenize the link using the OpenAthens link generator.

As an example, the durable link for Medical Physiology is:

https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/3-s2.0-C20110061677

The corresponding Athenized link is:

https://go.openathens.net/redirector/ubc.ca?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.clinicalkey.com%2Fdura%2Fbrowse%2FbookChapter%2F3-s2.0-C20110061677

This link is stable and will allow UBC users to log in via OpenAthens to access full text if they do not already have an OpenAthens session open. This particular item is also available via Summon: https://tinyurl.com/yjxu3uph.

Lexis Advance QuickLaw Instructions

In the menu bar above a file in this database, click "Actions" and select "link to this page"

A link will be generated that follows this format: https://advance-lexis-com.eu1.proxy.openathens.net/api/permalink/aaeaf7b4-29bd-4e73-ba03-93f2fe056ba3/?context=1505209

For the link to work properly, requiring a login via OpenAthens, you must add the following code to the of the link: ?identityprofileid=JKNWRN27861

The result is a link that looks like this: https://advance-lexis-com.eu1.proxy.openathens.net/api/permalink/aaeaf7b4-29bd-4e73-ba03-93f2fe056ba3/?context=1505209?identityprofileid=JKNWRN27861
