Bénéteau, Marcel : Chansons traditionnelles et identité culturelle chez les Francophones du Détroit Cet article propose une réflexion sur l’évolution de la collecte de faits folkloriques traditionnels sur le terrain. L’auteur a enquêté pendant plus de dix ans sur l’ancien territoire de la colonie du Détroit, c’est-à-dire dans la région de Windsor, à l’extrême sud-ouest de l’Ontario. Étant donné qu’aucun chercheur ne s’était penché sur la tradition orale de cette communauté francophone, la plus ancienne en Ontario, l’auteur voulut d’abord imiter les pionniers de la discipline en collectant les vestiges de la chanson traditionnelle française « avant que tout ne disparaisse ». Mais, en considérant le contexte historique du peuplement de la région et en comparant les résultats d’une étude linguistique sur le même terrain, la collecte de chansons traditionnelles est devenue beaucoup plus qu’une fin en soi. L’article examine donc le rôle de la chanson traditionnelle comme marqueur d’identité culturelle.

Bénéteau, Marcel : Identité régionale et appartenance culturelle : la chanson folklorique française du sud-ouest de l’Ontario Les études sur le sud-ouest de l'Ontario français, bien qu'existantes, sont tout de même peu nombreuses. Quoique certains travaux dans les domaines de l'histoire et de la linguistique aient tenté de présenter une vue d'ensemble de la région, aucune vision claire ne se dégage de la francophonie du SudOuest, ni dans le cadre d'une culture régionale ni dans le contexte plus large de la culture franco-ontarienne. L'étude ethnologique de la région, à peine amorcée, représenterait sans doute une étape importante dans le développement de ces deux visions complémentaires. Comme le remarque Jean-Pierre Pichette : "Le Nord-Ouest, le Sud et le Sud-Ouest n'ont pas encore été visités par les enquêteurs, et la connaissance qu'on en retire est forcément parcellaire. Cette tâche importante, qui relève de la fonction même de l'ethnologue, doit donc se poursuivre."

Bénéteau, Marcel : La chanson française de tradition orale en Ontario : données, tendances, état du répertoire L’étude de Marcel Bénéteau fait le bilan de la chanson traditionnelle française en Ontario et trace son évolution dans le temps et l’espace. L’auteur décrit le travail qu’il a entrepris pour déterminer en premier lieu en quoi consiste le répertoire de l’Ontario français ; à cette fin, il précise quelles sont ses balises historiques et géographiques (où et quand le répertoire s’est-il implanté sur le territoire ?) et ce qu’il comprend au juste (combien de chansons ? quelles chansons ? quelles catégories de chansons ?). Pour ce faire, il a dû s’astreindre à dépouiller les divers fonds d’archives disponibles afin de repérer, identifier et cataloguer plus de 12 000 versions de chansons recueillies en Ontario depuis la fin du xixe siècle, un travail de longue haleine qui a occupé l’auteur au cours des dix dernières années. Le résultat – premiers jalons d’un catalogue de la chanson traditionnelle française en Ontario – permet de décrire avec précision la richesse et la diversité du répertoire tout en tenant compte de ses particularités régionales et de ses apports au fonds commun que partagent les francophones des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.

Bénéteau, Marcel : L’art perdu de « faire des chansons » : la chanson de composition locale dans la région du Détroit "L’ethnologue Marcel Bénéteau s’intéresse à la chanson de composition locale, un secteur négligé dans le domaine de la chanson folklorique. Le plus souvent créées par des non-professionnels sur des airs connus, les chansons de ce type ont longtemps été considérées par les experts comme étant de facture maladroite, de contenu douteux et de valeur insignifiante comparées aux pièces importées de la France à l’époque coloniale. Conséquemment, les grands folkloristes du Canada français les ont peu recueillies. Pourtant, la facture de telles chansons, qui commémorent des événements locaux, qui mettent en valeur des incidents de la petite histoire et qui commentent les conditions sociales dans les communautés en question, est au coeur même de la démarche folklorique. « Faire des chansons » est une pratique qui engage les gens dans un dialogue avec la tradition et les amène à situer leur vécu dans le contexte plus large d’un procédé transmis d’une génération à l’autre. À partir d’un corpus de chansons locales composées dans la région de Windsor, l’auteur analyse les modalités de cet art de « faire des chansons », depuis l’appropriation et l’adaptation de chants existants jusqu’à la création de nouvelles chansons. De plus, il s’intéresse à la fonction sociale des chansons locales ainsi qu’à leur apport aux études ethnologiques, linguistiques et historiques."

Bénéteau, Marcel : Singularités et survivances dans le répertoire de chansons traditionnelles françaises du Détroit La région du Détroit, dans le sud-ouest ontarien, est sans doute le terrain de marge par excellence. Situé à la frontière des États-Unis et séparé des autres centres francophones du Canada par des centaines de kilomètres, le Détroit était historiquement la plaque tournante entre les centres établis de la Nouvelle-France et les possessions françaises des pays d’en haut (donc une marge d’abord, mais un centre par rapport à une aire encore plus marginale). Les communautés de la rivière Détroit ont maintenu tout au cours du xxe siècle un répertoire de chansons traditionnelles françaises qui est très différent — tant dans la variété de ses chansons types que dans les catégories de chansons qu’il favorise — de celui qui, évoluant dans la vallée laurentienne, s’est répandu dans les régions du Québec, ainsi qu’en Nouvelle-Angleterre et dans le nord et l’est de l’Ontario. Cette communication examine les caractéristiques de ce répertoire et l’éclairage qu’il apporte à l’étude de la chanson traditionnelle française en Amérique française.

Bénéteau, Marcel : Un répertoire de l’Ancien-Ontario : le chansonnier manuscrit de Félix Drouillard (1897-1903) Marcel Bénéteau approfondit son exploration du répertoire chanté de la région du Détroit. Si des chercheurs ont identifié certains des airs de la vieille France que chantaient les canotiers voyageant dans les Pays d’en haut avant le xxe siècle et que des ethnologues ont effectué d’importantes collectes dans le nord de l’Ontario auprès des Canadiens français qui ont migré à partir des années 1880, on connaît mal le répertoire des premiers colons français établis en terre ontarienne dès le xviiie siècle. Pour combler cette lacune, notre confrère ajoute une source remarquable : le cahier de chansons d’un jeune fils de cultivateur né à Rivière-aux-Canards en 1878. Ce manuscrit, rédigé par Félix Drouillard entre 1897 et 1903, s’avère le plus ancien répertoire attesté sur le territoire ontarien. Il réunit les paroles de 276 chansons que le scripteur a notées dans son milieu. Fait exceptionnel, en plus de livrer une mine de nouvelles chansons et de premières attestations, tant pour le Canada que pour la France, ce folkloriste avant la lettre inscrit le nom de cinquante et un de ses « informateurs ». Dans son analyse, Marcel Bénéteau pose un premier regard sur cette découverte : il la situe dans le contexte des recherches sur la chanson de tradition orale en Ontario français puis en expose la valeur historique et le rôle des chansonniers manuscrits dans la transmission de ce patrimoine ; il s’intéresse au rédacteur et à son réseau d’informateurs, précise les nouvelles connaissances qu’apporte le manuscrit Drouillard, ce qu’il illustre par une série de pièces choisies pour leur exemplarité.

Forsyth, Meghan : Performing Acadie: Marketing Pan-Acadian Identity in the Music of Vishten This article examines the influence of strategic musical alliances on the formation of a unique regional Acadian cultural identity. The Acadian communities of Prince Edward Island and les Îles-de-la-Madeleine (Québec), located on Canada's east coast, share a tumultuous socio-political history that is traced to le Grand Dérangement, the eighteenth-century deportation of thousands of Acadians from eastern Canada. The geographic location of the islands, their contemporary political affiliations, and divergent cultural retentions suggest distinct experiences of Acadian identity; nonetheless, renewed interest in inter-island partnerships has arisen over the past decade, often along musical lines. These alliances have been fostered largely by a young generation of musicians from the Acadian group, Vishtèn. Through their strategic musical, narrative, and marketing choices, members of Vishtèn have striven vigorously to advance the project of a shared island Acadian identity, while claiming a place in the global “traditional” music market. I conclude that this exchange has fostered an emic perception of a unified francophone Acadian community that has transformed the cultural geography of this region of “Acadia” and contributed to local processes of Acadian cultural revitalization.

Koegel, John : Spanish and French Mission Music in Colonial North America Despite the many negative aspects of European colonization endured by indigenous peoples throughout North America, music served as a powerful and positive force. This study demonstrates that musical life in the Franciscan and Jesuit missions throughout Spanish North America was fully developed, was a most important part of the evangelization process, and involved music similar to that performed in other mission areas in Spanish America. Musical life in New France and Louisiana is summarized here to show that the French operated a parallel system of musical evangelization and that the establishment of French settlements in North America corresponded in certain ways to Spanish practices.

Landry, Renée; Ménard, Denise & Preston, R.J. : Marius Barbeau Marius Barbeau was a pioneering anthropologist and the founder of professional folklore studies in Canada. He worked at the National Museum (now the Canadian Museum of History) from 1911 until the late 1960s, collecting a vast archive of thousands of traditional songs, texts and artifacts — especially of French Canadian and Aboriginal peoples. Barbeau also founded the Archives de folklore at Université Laval and several folklore groups. He was especially successful in bringing ethnology and folklore to the Canadian public through several prizewinning books, as well as tireless lecturing and teaching.

Laxer, Daniel : “Row, Brothers, Row”: Canadian Boat Songs, Imperial Glee, and National Identity, 1805–67 The collection and publication of folk songs was considered central to the expression of nationalism and national identity in the nineteenth century. The Irish poet Thomas Moore’s three-voiced glee titled “A Canadian Boat Song” was published in 1805 and was supposedly based on a folk melody of the French-Canadian voyageurs. This article explores how this invention of tradition relied on the pretense of authenticity to stand in as Canada’s national song, sparking its own category of poetry and music known as Canadian boat songs. It influenced the imaginings and experiences of British newcomers and immigrants, inspiring folk song collections and nationalist compositions that produced early articulations of English-Canadian national identity.

Mattern, Mark : Cajun Music, Cultural Revival: Theorizing Political Action in Popular Music Beginning in the 1960s, Cajun musicians initiated a cultural revival that would reverse years of assimilationist pressures, partly erase the ethnic stigma attached to Cajun identity, and contribute to economic vitality through tourism. Cajun music is interpreted in terms of three distinct forms of political action. The primary goal is to widen the discussion of political action in popular music to include forms of political action that have received little attention from researchers of the politics of popular music. In addition to the confrontational practices of opposition, resistance, and struggle, two other forms of political action are developed, including deliberative and pragmatic. The latter two should be viewed as complementing, rather than replacing, oppositional resistant forms of political action. The three kinds of political action are applied to Cajun music, and it is argued that Cajuns benefit from diverse political strategies.

McMillan, Barclay & Keillor, Elaine : Ernest Gagnon Gagnon is most noted for his work as a collector of French Canadian folk music. His song transcriptions, published 1865-67 as Chansons populaires du Canada, not only helped conserve a rich heritage, but alerted the musical world to the dignity and beauty of Québec's oral song tradition. He also took a keen interest in First Peoples' music and wrote a piano composition, Stadaconé (1858), which appears to be the first notated composition genuinely based on Indigenous materials in North America.

Piroth, Scott : Popular Music and Identity in Quebec In his book Banal Nationalism, Michael Billig demonstrates that nationalism is by no means a "peripheral phenomenon, present in ethnic separatist movements but removed from common nation states."1 Instead, citizens are perpetually reminded of their national identities by symbols such as flags, coins, national anthems, and political discourse. Quebecers are constantly bombarded with competing political discourse regarding whether Quebec is a "nation" or a "distinct society" and whether Quebecers form a "people," but such explicitly political discourse is not really "banal" nationalism. Billig writes: "The métonymie image of banal nationalism is not a flag which is consciously waved with fervent passion; it is the flag hanging unnoticed on the public building."2 Perhaps the most visible arena of symbolic conflict occurs in the battles over flags in Quebec, but popular culture is another arena where differences between "Quebecers" and "Canadians" manifest themselves. It has been suggested that Quebec's music represents Quebecers' quest for identity and that the success of Québécois music has solidified this identity.17 [Bruno Roy] argues that traditional folk songs served to transmit the dominant values of an era and, in the case of Quebec^ propagate a collective identity even before sound recordings were possible.18 The traditional style of Québécois singers placed a heavy emphasis on lyrics. Singer-songwriters, or chansonniers, such as Félix LeClerc achieved considerable success in Quebec and were occasionally successful in France as well. The emergence of Anglo-American rock 'n' roll in the 1950s and 1960s posed a challenge to aspiring popular music artists in Quebec. They could either ignore this new phenomenon and continue to record in the traditional styles; or they could produce a similar product, substituting French lyrics for English lyrics; or they could attempt to create rock 'n' roll with a distinctly Québécois flavor. Robert Charlebois was probably the first Quebec artist to successfully combine Anglo-American musical styles with the chansonnier tradition of Quebec's music, creating a commercially successful "product."19 Charlebois's success inspired a generation of Quebec artists and continues to influence popular music in Quebec today. [Dion] is unquestionably Quebec's most recognizable celebrity. She is so widely recognized that she is frequently referred to simply as "Céline" in Quebec's media. Her identity as a Quebecer is sometimes marked by referring to her as "notre Céline" or sometimes "la petite fille de Charlemagne."39 As a personality, Dion does not hide her Francophone Québécois origins. For example, Dion refused to accept the 1990 ADISQ award for best Anglophone artist in Quebec, arguing that she is not an Anglophone.40 Dion made a point of thanking Quebecers in French at the 1997 Grammy Awards, and her accent and non-standard French clearly mark her as a Quebecer.41 Frédéric Deniers suggests that Dion's status in Quebec is unique because of her spectacular success on the international stage. Thus, even though there is very little in her music that speaks specifically to Quebecers, her worldwide success demonstrates to Quebecers that they can achieve status in the world. In effect, her achievements are achievements for all Quebecers.42

Sexton, Rocky L. & Oster, Harry : Une ’Tite Poule Grasse ou la Fille Aînée [A Little Fat Chicken or the Eldest Daughter]: A Comparative Analysis of Cajun and Creole Mardi Gras Songs A common aspect of rural Louisiana Mardi Gras is the Courir du Mardi Gras (Mardi Gras Run), a begging quest in which a band of costumed merrymakers travel house-tohouse to solicit donations offood and money to provision a communalfeast. The songs associated with the Mardi Gras run fall into two broad categories: those derived from continental French and French Canadian drinking songs and others with origins in continental French and French Canadian begging songs. Both forms represent combinations of direct survivals of earlier song texts, slight modifications that occurred through generations of oral transmission, and significant changes introduced because of the desire to develop distinct local song variants.

Acadian Legends, Folktales and Songs from Prince Edward Island

Island historian and folklorist Georges Arsenault has been collecting songs and stories from Acadian Prince Edward Island since his student days in the 1970s: words gathered by lamplight in the early part of the 20th century, when the local men and women would pass on what they'd learned from elders long gone. His 17 informants were mostly hard-working parents of very large families, some well-educated and some not. Included in this collection are 8 stories, 13 legends and 23 songs with lyrics and musical notation, mainly reproduced from taped interviews. Originally published as Contes, legendes et chansons de l'Île-du-Prince-Edouard, this English translation by Sally Ross includes footnotes and a bibliography, as well as photos of his informants.

French Louisiana Music and Its Patrons: The Popularization and Transformation of a Regional Sound

French Louisiana music emerged from the bayous and prairies of Southwest Louisiana in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Pioneered by impoverished Acadian and Afro-Caribbean settlers, the sound is marked by a high-pitched fiddle playing loud and fast above the bellow of a diatonic accordion. With lyrics about disaster and heartache sung cheerfully in a French dialect, the effect is dissonant and haunting. French Louisiana music was largely ignored in mainstream music culture, except by a handful of collectors, scholars, and commercial promoters who sought to popularize it. From the first recordings in the 1920s to the transformation of the genre by the 1970s, the spread of this regional sound was driven by local, national, and international elites who saw the music's traditions and performers in the context of larger social, political, and cultural developments, including the folk revival and the civil rights and ethnic revival movements. Patricia Peknik illuminates how the music's history and meaning were interpreted by a variety of actors who brought the genre onto a national and global stage, revealing the many interests at work in the popularization of a regional music.

Listening to the Fur Trade

As fur traders were driven across northern North America by economic motivations, the landscape over which they plied their trade was punctuated by sound: shouting, singing, dancing, gunpowder, rattles, jingles, drums, fiddles, and - very occasionally - bagpipes. Fur trade interactions were, in a word, noisy. Daniel Laxer unearths traces of music, performance, and other intangible cultural phenomena long since silenced, allowing us to hear the fur trade for the first time. Listening to the Fur Trade uses the written record, oral history, and material culture to reveal histories of sound and music in an era before sound recording. The trading post was a noisy nexus, populated by a polyglot crowd of highly mobile people from different national, linguistic, religious, cultural, and class backgrounds. They found ways to interact every time they met, and facilitating material interests and survival went beyond the simple exchange of goods. Trust and good relations often entailed gift-giving: reciprocity was performed with dances, songs, and firearm salutes. Indigenous protocols of ceremony and treaty-making were widely adopted by fur traders, who supplied materials and technologies that sometimes changed how these ceremonies sounded. Within trading companies, masters and servants were on opposite ends of the social ladder but shared songs in the canoes and lively dances during the long winters at the trading posts. While the fur trade was propelled by economic and political interests, Listening to the Fur Trade uncovers the songs and ceremonies of First Nations people, the paddling songs of the voyageurs, and the fiddle music and step-dancing at the trading posts that provided its pulse.

Negotiating Difference in French Louisiana Music

Sara Le Menestrel explores the role of music in constructing, asserting, erasing, and negotiating differences based on the notions of race, ethnicity, class, and region. She discusses established notions and brings to light social stereotypes and hierarchies at work in the evolving French Louisiana music field. She also draws attention to the interactions between oppositions such as black and white, urban and rural, differentiation and creolization, and local and global. Le Menestrel emphasizes the importance of desegregating the understanding of French Louisiana music and situating it beyond ethnic or racial identifications, amplifying instead the importance of regional identity. Musical genealogy and categories currently in use rely on a racial construct that frames African and European lineage as an essential difference. Yet as the author samples music in the field and discovers ways music is actually practiced, she reveals how the insistence on origins continually interacts with an emphasis on cultural mixing and creative agency. This book finds French Louisiana musicians navigating between multiple identifications, musical styles, and legacies while market forces, outsiders' interest, and geographical mobility also contribute to shape musicians' career strategies and artistic choices. The book also demonstrates the decisive role of non-natives' enthusiasm and mobility in the validation, evolution, and reconfiguration of French Louisiana music. Finally, the distinctiveness of South Louisiana from the rest of the country appears to be both nurtured and endured by locals, revealing how political domination and regionalism intertwine.

La premiere partie de l'analyse porte sur les deux dernieres categories, offense et punition, dont les fonctions, d'abord narratives, sont mises en relation avec les personnages abstraits et concrets. Cette partie de l'etude, thematique d'abord, distingue sept types d'offense (auxquels correspondent necessairement des punitions) qui serviront a structurer l'ensemble du chapitre. Les quatre premiers types sont definis a partir de la relation offenseur / offense dans les cas ou l'offense est commise: entre partenaires amoureux, entre rivaux amoureux, par des personnes detenant l'autorite et par des personnes soumises a l'autorite. Les trois autres types d'offense seront plutot regroupes d'apres le caractere de l'offense mis en rapport avec les aspects des personnes offensees. On distingue donc les offenses commises envers l'honneur des personnes, envers les biens materiels des personnes ainsi qu'envers la vie des personnes. Au plan familial, les auteurs montrent les principaux lieux de conflit ou d'harmonie entre les membres d'une famille et examinent l'ensemble des rapports possibles: mere-fille, mere-fils, pere-fille, etc. Fortement teintees par le patriarcat, les chansons precisent les roles masculins et feminins a l'interieur de la famille. Ainsi, l'epoux, le fils et le frere jouissent de privileges dont sont prives l'epouse, la mere ou la fille. La fille est souvent au centre des preoccupations. Tandis que son mariage peut presenter toutes sortes de difficultes, chacun sera appele a donner son avis. Le fils, beaucoup plus libre, aura neanmoins a affronter une mere possessive dont le role apparaitra d'autant plus deprecie que la meme possessivite dans les relations pere-fille revetira un caractere de normalite. Selon les auteurs, il arrive frequemment que la relation d'autorite de la gent masculine soit renforcee par un titre de noblesse: un prince, un seigneur, un duc.

Songs of the Cajuns: A History and Analysis of Joie de Vivre: Five Impressions of Acadian-America by My exploration of Cajun song, from its origins as a French ballade into popular American song, will reveal the musical characteristics of Cajun music. My study's purpose is to increase ones understanding of the history of Cajun song and its music, and then determine why it is missing from the canon of American song repertoire. My study will include an analysis, performance and recording of Cajun song settings composed and arranged by Arles Estes. My investigation will research five traditional Cajun songs as they pertain to Estes' settings in order to broaden the roots of American song literature and enhance its growing body of repertoire. Cajun music enjoys popularity worldwide and though the songs that embody Cajun music are vast, the five traditional songs that I have chosen represent Cajun music in its most authentic form. These songs are emblematic of the cultural heritage of the Cajun people. Just as the Cajun's cuisine displays the essence of the Cajun people, the texts of these five songs represent the Cajun's struggles, the Cajun's history and the Cajun's spirit—their joie de vivre (exuberant enjoyment of life). These five songs contain the primary musical characteristics that make up Cajun music and act as a banner for the Cajun civilization. The Cajun ballad, "Allons à Layfayette," exemplifies early Cajun music and is still performed by Cajun musicians today. The children's song, "Cadet Rousselle," is prevalent in Cajun song due to its jovial nature, rich history and ancestral lineage. The songs focusing on "Evangeline" and "Jolie Blonde" both present pictures of the Cajuns and their way of life. While one is emblematic of a tragic and dissolute past, the other represents the Cajun people living in their Louisiana bayous. The ideal of 'going to Texas,' a metaphor throughout Cajun music, is expressed in the up-tempo song, "Grand Texas," and manifests a Cajun's zest for life. As a whole, these five Cajun songs are fine descriptors of the Cajun culture. These traditional songs epitomize the Cajuns love for their culture, family, history, food, fun, dancing, music, their heritage, and their love of living. All these things come alive in their music and their songs. As we explore the songs of the Cajun people, one can amass a greater knowledge and appreciation of the Cajuns and their cultural heritage, and the traditional songs of the Cajuns can assume their position among American song.Publication Date: 2017

“Ici On Chante en Français”: Giving a Voice to Cajun Culture by “Ici on parle Français” (“French is spoken here”) is a popular adage in South Louisiana and can be seen on signage and T-shirts in mom-and-pop stores throughout the heart of Cajun territory. This phrase reflects cultural pride and tenacity in a small but hearty group of people whose identity was nearly stripped away. Musical settings of Cajun French verse constituted a vital part of this culture. Why is this music important? It exists as historical preservation, a means to explore roots in a time when so many are rootless. These songs have been passed down through oral history for generations. They express many moods, from beautiful and sad to lively and fun. The document provides the text and melodies as transcribed from interviews with custodians of these songs living in Pierre Part, Louisiana. Also provided are phonetic spellings of the text and a pronunciation guide for Cajun French. Thus, this document provides tools that singers, historians, and composers can use in performance, research, and the creation of new works. One of the performers interviewed for this study, Mona Dugas, is already pointing the way to the future of Cajun songs by composing and performing new songs based on the Cajun French tradition. Cajun music has adapted through many influences, including Black Creole music, German polka bands, and country swing. The purpose of this study is to focus on the people of Pierre Part and their individual interpretations and trace the history of the songs they sing back to the forced migration of the Acadians from Canada to the present day.Publication Date: 2022
