Middle East Studies

Welcome! This guide highlights the key library resources for conducting research in the Middle East Studies, with a particular focus on history, cultures, religions, politics and economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), otherwise also known as Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA). To make your research process easier and smoother, resources are divided into the following categories:

• reference materials for locating background information, translating and transliterating original texts
• books and e-books on specific topics available at the UBC Library and online
• academic journals and databases licensed by the Library
• news sources and newspaper collections we subscribe to in print and digitally
• maps and atlases available in our reference collections
• primary sources focusing on the 19th and 20th century history of the Middle East and North Africa
• digital media including CDs, DVDs, streaming etc.

The final section is dedicated to resources that are freely and openly accessible on the internet, and includes everything from primary sources and dictionaries, to e-books, e-journals, photographs and digitized maps.
