Named after the soccer team established in Vancouver in 1974, the Whitecaps FC are the 17th team to compete in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Whitecaps joined MLS in 2009 and were the first Canadian team to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs in 2012. In December 2013, former Welsh soccer player Carl Robinson took over as head coach. The Whitecaps FC is owned by a group of four investors with a collective networth of $2 billion: Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and Steven Nash.
