Many genetics journals list specific style instructions on their website - you can find lists of journals on the "Articles & Pre-Appraised Evidence" page. Others instruct authors to use published styles such as Vancouver Style (also called Citing Medicine: The NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers), AMA style, PubMed's Journal Abbreviation tool, or others.
