Indian Residential School System in Canada

UBC Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre

The Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre opened in April 2018. Located on unceded Musqueam territory, on the University of British Columbia's Vancouver campus, the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre seeks to:

  • provide digital access to the records gathered by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada to former students and survivors of the Indian residential schools and their families and communities, and to provide survivors and community members with a place to gather and reflect upon their experiences and history,
  • serve as an institution of memory, ensuring that the experiences of the Indian residential schools, the policies that established and directed them, and the many forms of abuse that occurred within them will not be forgotten
  • support research and dialogue about history, the most productive ways to think about history, and the ways in which Indigenous communities can and are working to recover from the effects of the schools and other policies and actions.

IRSHDC is affiliated with the National Research Centre established by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in Winnipeg, and offers a foundation for advanced research and questions about how we address the past and many of its issues, a hub for campus and community partnerships and cross-disciplinary work, and a focal point for thinking about the future. It seeks to support community access, public programming, curriculum development, advanced research, and intensive and regular discussion on issues of common concern.
