Zotero

To use Zotero, you will need to create a Zotero account and download the Desktop version.

The Library offers a guide on Zotero and other citation managers, as well as live training and support and presentation slides available through GitHub. The Research Commons also offer consultations.

Writing a paper with in text citations and a bibliography

  1. Ensure that your Zotero button has appeared in MS Word. You may need to manually install it.
  2. Find the Zotero citation options in MS Word under Zotero in the navigation menu.
  3. Select the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (or alternate) citation style.
  4. Use Insert Citation to add citations.
  5. Look up the author of the paper you want to cite and hit enter.
  6. Use Insert Bibliography create a list of citations at the end of your paper.
  7. If there are errors in the citations, correct them first in your Zotero app.

Creating a stand-alone bibliography (note: you do not need the MS Word plugin)

  1. In the Zotero desktop app, select the articles that you want to create a bibliography for.
  2. Right click and select Create Bibliography for Items from the menu. 
  3. Select the American Psychological Association, 7th edition (or alternate) citation style.
  4. Give the bibliography a name and save it. 
  5. Open bibliography. 
  6. Copy and paste the citations into your Word processor of choice. 

Zotero can also be used in Google Drive. 

APA Style

American Psychological Association (APA) style is one of several citation styles used in academic writing. The seventh edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is a comprehensive resource, available at most UBC Libraries.

Here are a few useful resources that provide examples and should answer most of your questions about APA. Remember you can save citations from Summon in APA format too!
