Research Tips

  • Remember to start with the community’s website — what are the first things the Nation wants to tell you?
  • Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada’s First Nation profiles are also helpful.
  • Canada Newstream is useful for searching local and hyperlocal newspapers about the First Nation and the surrounding community. But also remember to think about the credibility of the news agency and any biases that might be present.
  • Indigenous Peoples of North America database is another good resource.
  • UBC Vancouver Indigenous Portal outlines UBC’s commitment to Indigenous engagement and has information on Indigenous resources at UBC.
  • Watch this clip from your David Lam librarians that explains how to effectively search article databases, if you don’t already know how to do so.
  • If you need research help, the librarians at David Lam Library have lots of drop-in hours. Information on these services is here.
  • Head over to the citations page if you need assistance on citation!
