About the Ethics and Social Responsibility Assignment

Assignment 2 looks at business in the news. You are writing a report to the CEO of a company called Starburst, for whom social responsibility is important and who wants to develop an an ethical and affordable product.  Areas of your report for which you would consult secondary sources include:

  • exploring the questions raised by corporations like Joe Fresh who outsource the manufacturing of products like clothing to developing countries.
  • exploring what happened in Bangladesh.

These secondary sources should help you in your recommendation about whether or not Starburst should outsource its manufacturing, given its priorities of being both ethical and affordable.

For more specific details about your assignment, please consult your course outline.

Using Article Databases

Articles

Articles from reputable journals and newspapers provide a variety of opinions. Sometimes you can identify articles from trade journals or newspapers on the internet:

However, you may find that it is difficult to confirm whether or not the journal is reputable, searches are too generic, or the URL for the article disappears within a few days. Library article databases remain one of your richest sources of information, as they cover reputable sources of information, enable historical access and enable complex searches.. Explore the databases to find articles on Joe Fresh, Bangaldesh, ethics, social responsibility, and outsourcing and the garment industry.

Identify the various concepts you are researching.  Combine recombine a variety of search terms in each of the databases. Examples include:

  •  (Joe Fresh or  Loblaws) and ethics and (affordability or prices or inexpensive or contracting out or outsourcing)
  • ("Corporate social responsibility" or "social responsibility of business" or ethics or ethical or fair trade or sustainability) and (garment industry or textile mills or clothing factories or clothing industry or clothing industries or apparel industry)
  • (salaries or wages) and (clothing industry or garment industry or apparel or clothing factories)
  • (standards or safety) and (garment industry or apparel or clothing industry)
  • Rana Plaza Factory Collapse
  • (Contracting out or outsourcing) and (clothing or garment or textile or fashion or apparel)
