Books

UBC Library's default search engine Summon will return books, articles, book reviews, maps, websites and even datasets. You can always narrow your results by content type, subject, or even library branch using the filters in the left-hand column.

If you want to limit your search to books at UBC, you may be better off using our catalogue, which focuses on material physically held at UBC (it also contains links to eBooks and points to journal titles). To get to the Catalogue, select the Search Collections tab from the top of the library home page and select Books & Media (Catalogue). 

Once you find a book in the catalogue that looks useful for your topic, look at the Subject Headings in the record. You can then click on those links to find more books on that topic.

You'll notice that the call numbers in the catalogue record are also hyperlinked. Click the call number to browse the books stacks virtually.

Tips for Searching the Library Catalogue

  1. Power searching with subjects: One of the advantages of searching for books in the catalogue is you can search by subject. Find the most relevant results with a subject search. Or, once you find a book in the catalogue that looks useful for your topic, look at the Subject Headings in the record. You can then click on those links to find more books on that topic.
  2. Truncation: Broaden your search efficiently by using truncation. The truncation symbol in the catalogue is ? Find variant endings of your search term by using ? e.g. a search for the word: immigr? retrieves books, etc. with the word immigrant, immigration, immigrating, immigrants, etc.
  3. Ebooks: search for ebooks in the library catalogue by specifying location = online
  4. Browse the call number: You'll notice that the call numbers in the catalogue record are also hyperlinked. Click the call number to browse the books stacks virtually.

Subject Headings

What are Subject Headings?

Subject Headings are standard terms used by the University of British Columbia Library (and most other college and university libraries) to show the subjects of library materials. Subject headings are assigned to all items listed in the online catalog, which makes it easier to find books on the same or similar topics. Subject headings are hyperlinked, so you can click on the term to see other materials on the same topic.

Subject terms can be access from the Library of Congress Classification Outline. These terms are also published in four large red volumes, called Library of Congress Subject Headings, or LCSH (sometimes called simply "the big red books"). The set is located at the Humanities and Social Sciences reference desk on 2nd floor of Koerner Library.
