Management consultants advise clients on the best methods to run their business in major practice areas. The industry is fragmented, consisting of a few large companies and many small boutique consultants, most privately-owned. The industry is sometimes referred to as the "professional services industry."

The consulting industry consists of various sectors - management consulting, environmental consulting, human resource consulting, manufacturing operations consulting, supply chain consulting, IT consulting, etc. This guide focuses on one segment of the industry - management consulting.
