2016 is the Wikipedia Year of Science and we are celebrating Science Literacy Week with a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon focused on adding more content to Wikipedia about local women scientists - UBC researchers and alumni. SFU and BCIT Libraries will also be hosting events at their libraries too. Please see the project page for more details about this shared event: Wikipedia Meetup Local Women in Science.
Working with Wikipedia provides many relevant learning experiences for our students, staff and researchers covering areas as varied as open access, scholarly communication, copyright, construction of information, evaluation and situating information in context, wikis, peer-review, and more.....
We are warmly inviting suggestions of UBC women in science - faculty, students, alumni, that we may work on improving their Wikipedia articles (adding citations) or creating articles in Wikipedia. Wikipedia editors use the following criteria to establish notability. If possible, when offering a name for inclusion on our list of women scientists needing Wikipedia articles or edits, please include secondary material e.g. Mainstream newspapers, Peer-reviewed journals, Books published by university presses, University-level textbooks, Magazines, journals, and books published by respected publishing houses) that can be used to verify their notability. Thank you! Please send your questions and suggestions to Katherine Miller.
Please bring your own laptop.
