  1. Log into Mendeley. If you don't have Mendeley installed, follow the instructions in the Citation Management Guide to download and set up Mendeley.

  2. Under Collections on the navigation menu on the left side, select New Collection. Name the collection.

  3. From the Navigation menu on the left side, select Add New. Select Import Library and choose RIS. Select the file you exported from RefWorks. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into Mendeley.
Dropdown menu from Add New. Under Import Library submenu, RIS is highlighted.

  4. The references will automatically upload to the All References section. Ensure this section is organized by the ADDED column. Then, select the references you imported. They should all have an identical timestamp in this column. Screenshot of Mendeley library. Four references are selected, and the added column is highlighted, showing they all have identical timestamps of 2:36 pm.

  5. Click Organize, select Add to Collection, and choose the collection you created for this folder. Repeat as necessary.Organize menu at the bottom of Mendeley Reference Manager. Add to Collection is highlighted.

Some users report difficulties with uploading RIS files into Mendeley. If your references don't upload properly, try using BibTeX (.bib) instead. The process is identical, except in both exporting and importing, choose BibTeX instead of RIS.
