This guide was created for Indigenous peoples who are interested in writing, editing, and publishing Indigenous stories. This guide also provides a comprehensive list of Indigenous publishers across Canada.
"This guide is intended to provide assistance in identifying current publishers of material by or about First Nations, Métis and Inuit. The focus is on Indigenous-owned publishers, and academic and small presses that publish the work of Indigenous authors. A particular effort is made to include publishers of Indigenous language materials. More detail is provided on publishers from Central Canada."
Ningwakwe Learning Press is an Aboriginal social enterprise which creates, publishes, markets and prints Indigenous literacy and cultural learning resources for all peoples.
General Canadian Publishers
There are several non-Indigenous publishers in Canada who often produce texts that are useful for Indigenous Studies researchers and feature Indigenous authors. These include:
HighWater Press - the Indigenous-focused imprint of Portage and Main Press - publishes "books that portray a wide-ranging expression of Indigenous peoples’ culture and experiences, including [...] novels, graphic novels, memoirs, and children’s books".
Second Story Press publishes "feminist-inspired book for adults and young readers". Since the launch of their Indigenous writing award in 2015, they have been building a list Indigenous creators.
While part of a large company, Fifth House Press "specializes in Native North American books". The site offers easily navigable lists of adult, children's fiction and children's non-fiction titles.
Collaboration of the University of Arizona Press, the University of Minnesota Press, the University of North Carolina Press, and Oregon State University Press. No longer printing.
