1.07 Boolean operator: OR

Use OR  to combine two similar or related terms in a group.

Your search will retrieve items which contain either term. This will expand your search results. You can combine more than 2 terms with OR. The more terms you combine, the larger your search results will be.

Let's practice searching in PubMed using the Boolean operator OR

  1. Enter the search term children in the search box. Press Enter. How many items did this search retrieve? 
  2. Enter the search terms children OR adolescents OR teenagers in the search box. Press Enter. How many items did this search retrieve?

  4. Did you get MORE or LESS results when combining the search terms with the boolean operator OR?
