ENGL 500: Getting Started

Getting Started

Note: If you are doing your research from home, you can access licensed Library resources including ebooks, journals, indexes & databases, and other resources using EZproxy. All you need is a valid Campus-Wide Login (CWL) or UBC Library Card.

Graduate Student Resources in the Library

The number of library workshops for graduate students has expanded with the establishment of the Koerner Library Research Commons. For more information about the Research Commons and a list of upcoming workshops, have a look at the following links. If you have any ideas for other workshops, please let me know.

Citing Your Sources

I recommend that you invest some time in learning to use one of the online citation management tools. Have a look at our How To Cite guide for a description of some of the more popular tools and sign up for one of the Library's free workshops.

Web-based citation management tools enable you to:

  • download, gather, and store references from databases and library catalogues automatically
  • format citations and bibliographies in seconds
  • connect to your account anywhere there's web access
  • share your citations with other users
  • format bibliographies, in-text references, and footnotes automatically in MLA or 240 other styles.
